English Channel Qualifying Swim, Tawas Bay, Lake Huron, Mich., September 25, 2010
To qualify, you must complete a 6-hr swim or longer in water less than or equal to 60 degrees. Starting time: 8:30 a.m. Air temp: 48 degrees. Water temp: 56 degrees. Last three hours of swim: water temp 48-49-48 degrees. Crew: Lynn, Noah, and Karen. After finishing, I dined on hot soup, hot tea, hot mashed potatoes & meat loaf and enjoyed a warm shower. What did I think about during this freezing swim? Warm foods. I also kept asking my crew to find the warm water. They said they were trying. At one point I saw Noah lean over the boat to take the water temperature and I heard him yell to the crew, "it says 50!" Then I saw Lynn grab the thermometer in disbelief. I yelled, "WHAT did he say?" They replied, "You're doing great. Just keep swimming." I did until I heard six blasts on the air horn, signaling six hours were complete.
